A designation, five vendors, and the numbers behind both.

What follows is the case I put to the CIO, in the same order I put it: what the hospital gained clinically, what it stopped renting, and what it now owns.

Clinical DNV designation

Avoidance $575,000 / yr modelled

Retired 4 vendor platforms

Uptime 99.9% across the portfolio

Clinical impact

The DNV designation was the point, not a by-product.

Hand hygiene compliance had been measured by observation: late, sampled, and altered by the presence of the observer. Direct event capture replaced inference with a record, and the audit trail was designed into the schema rather than reported on top of it. That distinction is what a surveyor asks about.

Cost avoidance

Five platforms replaced with software the hospital owns.

Each line was sized against a real quote before any code was written. These are modelled annual avoidance figures against those alternatives, not realised savings booked to a ledger, and every one traces back to a system with users on it today.

Ref · System USD / Year
A-01 Policy & Procedure Management Transactional checkout prevents concurrent edits. 10,370 active documents. 240,000
A-02 Performance Evaluation Engine Digitised job descriptions, scoring algorithm, Supervisor to HR to Executive routing. 185,000
A-03 On-Call Scheduling 212 live lists, 628,000 shifts published, iCal feeds and conflict detection. 120,000
A-04 Digital Fax Dynamic PDF rendering with a SQL dashboard. Paper workflow eliminated. 30,000
4 systems · all in production 575,000 / yr

On these figures

Avoidance is not the same as savings, and I present it as avoidance deliberately. The hospital did not receive a cheque; it stopped paying a licence and gained control of the data underneath it. The second half of that sentence is usually the more valuable one.

Method

None of this was luck.

The same four rules produced every line in the table above. They are the reason to expect the next decision to go the same way.

  1. 01

Size it against a real quote before writing a line.

A recommendation to build without a number attached is an opinion. With one it is a business case, and it survives the room it is presented in. Every platform on this site was costed against the vendor alternative first.

    Four platforms retired
  2. 02

Design the audit trail into the schema, not onto it.

Retention, access logging, and evidence are cheap on day one and expensive the month before a survey. A compliance report built on top of a schema that was not designed for it is a report a surveyor will question.

    DNV designation
  3. 03

Own the data, not just the interface.

The licence is the smaller half of a vendor relationship. The larger half is who can answer where protected information lives, who can add a field this sprint, and whether a renewal is a negotiation or a notice.

    One governance model
  4. 04

Make the constraint explicit, then let departments keep their process.

Imposing one workflow on twelve departments is how internal software gets abandoned. The platform should own identity, conflict, and delivery; the department should keep the rules it already trusts.

What ownership buys

The licence was the smaller half of the argument.

  1. 01

The data has one governance model.

Five vendors meant five data processing agreements, five export formats, and five answers to where protected information lives. One platform means one answer.

  2. 02

Change stops being a support ticket.

A department that needs a new field gets it in a sprint rather than in a vendor's next release, if it appears at all. That changes what departments are willing to ask for.

  3. 03

    Renewals become negotiations.

Owning the record is what turns a renewal notice into a conversation with options. The contract management platform exists precisely to make that true across the rest.
